| How do you know when you have a vitamin or mineral deficiency? What are the symptoms, and what is the right amount to take of a supplement? Can you overdose on vitamins, and what are those side effects? Patricia Hausman has done an outstanding job in answering these questions. All of the basic vitamins are covered in the book as well as minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, zinc, copper, chromium, and selenium. For example, on Vitamin D, too much of it can raise blood levels of calcium so high that death can occur. Also, excessive intake of Vitamin D actually weakens bones instead of helping them. Kidneys may fail, too, if there is too much calcium in the blood due to high levels of Vitamin D. An increase of this vitamin to just 1200 milligrams promotes the risk of a heart attack or kidney stones. Most multiple vitamins contain 400 milligrams, but if you drink three glasses of milk per day, you are adding 300 milligrams more. Then, if you eat a lot of cereal, you are getting close to the 1200 milligram trouble limit. What about potassium? It is necessary for normal functioning of nerves and muscles, especially the heart. A deficiency can cause fatigue, weakness, abnormal heartbeat, and muscle twitches. An overdose, however, can kill you. Patricia explains how you can get the right dose of potassium as well as other vitamins and minerals that we need. Did you know that Vitamin A is essential for building bones as well as maintaining good eyesight? Vitamin A also keeps the membranes of your body cells intact. This means that it will minimize damage if you have an accident, and it could help you recover. The mucous membranes are kept in good health by Vitamin A, too. The best way to assure that you are getting enough of this vitamin is to take a supplement with at least 5000 IU. Unless you eat a lot of spinach or other greens, you are most likely deficient in Vitamin A if you do not take a daily supplement. Important facts like this abound in The Right Dose. It is one of the most valuable books I have ever read. |
